On July 30-31, 2024 in Ho Chi Minh City, The University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) hosted the Annual International Conference on Economy, Law, and Government 2024 (ELG2024), focusing on "Approaches to the Twin Transition – Digitalization and Climate Change in Developing Countries." This conference brought together global experts to explore sustainable development through digital and green strategies.

The Sustainable Finance Institute played a crucial role in chairing two significant sessions. Assoc. Prof. Bui Thi Mai Hoai, Director of the Sustainable Finance Institute, led the "Sustainable Finance and Environmental Policy" session, which highlighted the integration of financial strategies and environmental policies to address climate challenges. This session underscored the importance of sustainable finance as a key driver for achieving environmental goals and promoting long-term economic stability.

In this session, presentations included: 

  • "Green Credit Products in the World and Experience for Vietnam" by Nhung Thi Hong Nguyen, discussed by Nguyen Thi Anh.
  • "Develop and Operate a Forest Carbon Market - Opportunities and Challenges in Vietnam" by Nguyen Thi Anh, discussed by Bach Tan Sinh.
  • "Shifting the Role of Stakeholders in Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy Making from the Transformative Innovation Policy Approach - The Case of Renewable Energy in Vietnam" by Bach Tan Sinh, discussed by Tien Thai Thuy.
  • "Challenges to Sustainable Agricultural Practices Adoption: A Case of Orange Supply Chain" by Tien Thai Thuy, discussed by Nhung Thi Hong Nguyen

Dr. Pham Thai Binh, Vice Director of the Sustainable Finance Institute, chaired the "Governance and Corporate Responsibility" session, emphasizing corporate governance's role in fostering responsible business practices. Discussions covered various aspects of corporate responsibility, including ethical decision-making, transparency, and stakeholder engagement. Key presentations included: 

  • "Enhancing Corporate Governance through ESG in the Transition to a Green Economy" by Hoai Bui Thi Mai, discussed by Vannasinh Souvannasouk.
  • "The Impact of Bank Credit on Economic Growth in the Lao PDR" by Vannasinh Souvannasouk, discussed by Dinh Long Tran.
  • "The Moderating Effect of Monetary Policy and ESG Practices on the Relationship Between Leverage and Firm Performance in ASEAN-5 Emerging Countries" by Dinh Long Tran, discussed by Nguyen Thi Tam Hien.
  • "Effect of Environmental-Social-Governance Report on Corporate Performance: A Case Study in Vietnam," discussed by Bui Thi Mai Hoai.

Keynote speakers at ELG2024 included renowned experts such as Prof. Ulrike Grote, Prof. Niloufer Selvadurai, and Prof. Almas Heshmati, who provided insights into the integration of digital and green strategies for sustainable development. The conference featured over 120 paper presentations, addressing legal, economic, and technological perspectives on sustainability.

This year's conference reinforced the critical role of collaboration among universities, businesses, and policymakers in addressing global challenges. The sessions chaired by the Sustainable Finance Institute provided a platform for meaningful dialogue and the exchange of innovative ideas, paving the way for a sustainable future.
